MBT Auckland 2026
Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Complex Trauma
Presented by Norka Malberg and Mark Dangerfield
Dates: 3–5 August 2026
Location: Greenlane Clinical Centre, Auckland, New Zealand
Join us for three days of specialist training in Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Complex Trauma (MBT-A), designed for clinicians working with young people and families affected by trauma, attachment disruption, emotional dysregulation, and complex relational difficulties.
Highly relevant for clinicians working within ACC Sensitive Claims, child and adolescent mental health services, trauma-informed practice, and community mental health settings, this internationally recognised workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory and clinical application of MBT with adolescents presenting with complex trauma.
Participants will develop practical, evidence-informed skills to enhance assessment, formulation, and intervention with young people whose trauma histories impact emotional regulation, identity development, interpersonal functioning, and capacity to mentalize.
Key learning areas include:
• Understanding the developmental impact of complex trauma on mentalizing capacities
• Recognising attachment disruption and pre-mentalizing modes in clinical practice
• Working with emotional dysregulation, relational ruptures, and high-risk presentations
• Applying core MBT-A interventions to restore reflective functioning
• Strengthening work with parents and caregivers to support relational safety and resilience
• Integrating MBT principles into trauma-informed formulation and treatment planning
This training is suitable for psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and other mental health professionals working with adolescents and families.
An invaluable opportunity for clinicians seeking to deepen their capacity to work effectively with complex trauma presentations in adolescence through a developmentally informed, attachment-focused, evidence-based approach.
